Docker Commands

1. docker –version

This command is used to get the currently installed version of docker

2. docker pull

 docker pull <image name>

This command is used to pull images from the docker repository(hub.docker.com)

3. docker run

docker run <image name>

This command is used to create a container from an image

4. docker ps

This command is used to list the running containers

5. docker ps -a

This command is used to show all the running and exited containers

6. docker exec

 docker exec -it <container id> <command>

This command is used to access the running container -i flag is for typing in the the STDIN of the the container -t flag show the text that is sent and received in a nice formattted screen

sh is a command processor or shell

docker exec -it container-id sh

7. docker stop

docker stop <container id>

This command stops a running container

8. docker kill

 docker kill <container id>

This command kills the container by stopping its execution immediately. The difference between ‘docker kill’ and ‘docker stop’ is that ‘docker stop’ gives the container time to shutdown gracefully, in situations when it is taking too much time for getting the container to stop, one can opt to kill it

12. docker images

This command lists all the locally stored docker images

13. docker rm

 docker rm <container id>

This command is used to delete a stopped container

14. docker rmi

 docker rmi <image-id>

15. docker build

docker build <path to docker file>**

docker build -t Docker-ID/Project-name-that-you-want:Version

This command is used to build an image from a specified docker file

 16.Docker copy

 COPY <source_file> <destination_directory>

This command copies files or directories from the host machine’s file system to the container’s file system during Docker image construction.

1. Docker history

docker history <image_name>

Using this command, you may examine the evolution of a Docker image or its constituent parts.

1. Docker Logout 

docker logout [REGISTRY_URL]

This command is used to log out or remove the credentials used to authenticate with a Docker registry.

docker logout [REGISTRY_URL] 

This command is used to log out of a Docker registry or to delete the credentials used to login with it. 

1. Docker network

docker network create <network_name>

This command manages Docker networks. Docker networks enable containers to connect securely and isolatedly with one another and with external network resources.

1. Docker restart

docker restart [OPTIONS] CONTAINER [CONTAINER…]

This command is used to restart one or more Docker containers that are currently operating. Restarting a container entails gently pausing it and then restarting it with the same configuration and parameters.

docker search [OPTIONS] TERM

1. Docker volume

docker volume create my_volume

This command creates a new Docker volume named “my_volume” in the Docker container. Volumes in Docker are generated independently of containers.

1. Automatic Dockerfile creation and compose.yaml

docker init 

the text editor will put forward some questions and finally you will get the required dockerfile and compose.yaml

1. Overrides

   docker run image echo hi there
   docker run image ls
   

2. Flags ``` -p 8080:8080

first 8080 mentions route incoming requests on this port on localhost second 8080 is the port inside the container this is called port mapping

docker-compose up docker-compose up –build docker-compose up -d docker-compose down docker-compose ps # searches for the yml file in the pwd and lists container running based on that yml file ```

restart policies of docker compose if a docker container fails to and exits then restart policies of docker are used to restart the containers. in the yaml under the type of service we should include.

• restart : always (or) no (or) on-failure (or) unless-stopped.
• “no” Never attempt to restart this . container if it stops or crashes.
• always - If this container stops for any reason always attempt to restart it.
• on-failure - Only restart if the container stops with an error code.
• unless-stopped - Always restart unless we (the developers) forcibly stop it.
